Five things that are fixed on 21 October
- The launch did not move to 2027. iPhone Duo was announced 9 September, pre-orders opened 16 October, and 23 October is still launch day. What slipped into next year is the ship estimate on new orders.
- United States: about half an hour after pre-order, every color, capacity, and carrier showed 25 January 2027. AppleInsider checked again on 19 October and still saw about that date.
- Mainland China has two records from the same night. Do not merge them. Cailian Press saw at least 7–8 weeks. Huxiu says the estimate hit 22–23 January in under half an hour. The limit is two phones per person.
- The shortage is demand plus a ramp. Counterpoint treats 6 million units as the ceiling for 2026 shipments. TrendForce is about 5 million. Both are analyst estimates, not an Apple inventory figure.
- List prices did not change: from ¥15,999 in China, from $1,999 in the US. Macworld logged a 1TB eBay sale at $3,777.77 against a $2,599 list price.
Apple told reporters that pre-order demand for its first foldable iPhone was “nothing short of extraordinary,” that it is working to deliver units faster, and that it will keep taking online orders. That confirms demand. It does not state a volume. See AppleInsider, 19 October.
On pre-order day, the ship estimate slid into 2027
Today is 21 October 2026. iPhone Duo’s launch line still says 23 October. On 12 October, “2027” still belonged to an old rumor: whether the phone would slip to next year before it was released. After pre-orders opened on 16 October, January 2027 became the ship estimate on new orders. The name, the price, and launch day did not move. Screen size, thickness, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 comparison stay in the release-and-price piece. This one is only about stock.
Mainland China pre-orders opened at 8:00 p.m. on 16 October. A Cailian Press reporter opened Apple’s site that night. The page took about ten minutes to land, then showed a limit of two units per person, no remaining 23 October launch appointments, and a ship estimate of at least seven to eight weeks on every configuration. The same night, JD.com’s Apple store showed more than 3 million reservations and “no stock.” The story went out at 21:58. The headline said the pre-sale sold out in a flash. The body is this minute-by-minute account, not a cut straight to next year. Story: Cailian Press.
The US store opened at 8:00 a.m. Eastern, the same moment as 8:00 p.m. in Beijing. Macworld’s live blog caught the slide: the pre-order page opened at 8:07, an unlocked 256GB soon showed 1–8 December, then every color and capacity moved into December, and by about 8:21 the window was 15–22 December. Roughly half an hour after pre-orders began, every color, capacity, and carrier showed 25 January 2027. Macworld called it the furthest iPhone pre-order slip they had seen, and noted that phones often ship a week or two before the furthest quoted date, with supply still tight through the holidays. China, the US, and Europe are not on one ship date
Reading “orders slip into 2027” as “the whole world is locked to 25 January” will send you to the wrong page. Each row below is a public note from one moment. This piece did not reopen the buy pages on 21 October.
| Record | Ship estimate seen then | When it was written down | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple China | At least 7–8 weeks; another note says 22–23 January | Evening of 16 October | Cailian Press; Huxiu |
| Apple US | Every configuration, 25 January 2027 | About 30 minutes in; still about that on 19 October | Macworld; AppleInsider |
| United Kingdom | White 256GB once showed 14–21 December | That morning, before the January date | Macworld |
| Germany | Mid-December | Same morning, via Macwelt | Macworld |
Read the two China notes separately. After the page opened, Cailian Press saw at least seven to eight weeks, which from 16 October lands around early December. Huxiu describes another stretch: about twelve minutes in, several Apple retail stores around Shanghai could no longer book 23 October pickup; in under half an hour, Apple China’s estimate reached 22–23 January 2027. See Huxiu. The gap of several weeks means the page was still moving backward that night. It was not one locked date.
The public recheck that lines up on 19 October is the US one. AppleInsider wrote that online orders were still open, the ship estimate was still about 25 January, and the brief “order online, pick up in store” option had been replaced by “check back for availability on 10.24.” The UK and Germany rows are morning snapshots from before the slide into January. They are not the final dates as of 21 October. Buy pages: Apple China, apple.com/iphone-duo.
Hard to buy because demand is high and three lines are ramping together
The demand side is concrete. Apple used the phrase “nothing short of extraordinary.” One JD.com storefront passed 3 million reservations. A reservation is not an order, and an order is not finished stock. Among people who already own an iPhone, those waiting for a foldable and those on a normal upgrade cycle landed on the same first batch. That half of the story holds. It does not explain why the hinge and the panel were already late in the first half of the year.
Liz Lee, associate director at Counterpoint Research, told Cailian Press on 16 October that the constraint is not one missing part. In the first half of the year, foldable OLED panels slipped on production stability and delivery, so the phone’s build plan moved; the hinge went through design changes; final assembly took longer than expected to settle. Her point was that the panel, the hinge, and assembly have to stabilize together as volume rises. An earlier industry figure of 10 million units for the year, she said, came from an aggressive plan Apple set at the end of 2025. As mass production moved forward, the working target came down. In August, Counterpoint treated 6 million units for 2026 as a ceiling, and said the year could still finish a bit under that, depending on the fourth-quarter ramp.
The line is in China, and it is still ramping. On 11 October, Apple chief operating officer Sabih Khan visited the iPhone Duo line at Foxconn in Zhengzhou and said the team was scaling production to Apple’s quality standard. On 15 October, Tim Cook said in Shanghai that the phone is manufactured only in China. Neither sentence says there is enough stock. The hardware lines up with that ramp. Cailian Press’s retelling of Apple’s own description includes a grade-5 titanium frame, a 3D-printed recycled-titanium hinge cover, a hinge of more than 100 micro parts plus a carbon-fiber support plate, a scratch-resistant coating and a nano texture meant to soften the crease, and a battery on each side with a custom vapor chamber. That is a structure note, not a teardown.
| Source | Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Counterpoint, August; restated by Liz Lee in October | 6 million, treated as a ceiling | 2026 shipments. A rough fourth-quarter ramp could mean fewer |
| TrendForce, September | About 5 million | Apple’s contribution to 2026 global foldable shipments. About 20.2 million worldwide in the same forecast |
| Earlier industry target | 10 million | An aggressive plan from the end of 2025. Revised down in mass production. Not current shipments |
Do not add these rows, and do not call them Apple’s official output. TrendForce also offered a contrast: remove Apple’s roughly 5 million and 2026 Android foldable shipments are about 15.2 million, down more than 20 percent year over year. That is a full-year forecast. It does not say the Galaxy Z Fold 8 counter is empty today. The Fold 8 is already on sale. Price and thickness are in the comparison.
“Why is it so hard to buy?” needs two sentences. First: the opening batch is small next to reservations in the millions and a global upgrade base. Second: it is small because the foldable display, the hinge, and assembly are still ramping together, and the year’s shipment talk has already come down from 10 million to the 5–6 million band. “Too popular” alone drops the second sentence. “They cannot build it” alone ignores the pre-order demand Apple itself described.
If you still want one: Apple, the store, a carrier, a reseller
Walking into a store on 23 October and placing an online order today with a January ship estimate are different acts. The four paths do not cost the same thing.
| Path | What can be said on 21 October | The cost |
|---|---|---|
| Order on Apple’s site | Apple says it is still taking online orders | Ship estimates sit around January 2027. 25 January is a page cap, not a promise |
| Apple Store on 23 October | Pickup was replaced by “check back on 24 October” | Apple has not confirmed spare launch-day stock. Go and look. Do not assume it is there |
| US carriers | Earlier dates showed up on pre-order morning | You need to be a customer. Those October and November quotes were a snapshot |
| Resale | A 1TB unit sold for $3,777.77 | More than $1,000 over the $2,599 list. You are buying a place in line |
Keep the disagreement on the store row. On 19 October AppleInsider wrote that MacRumors said staff had been told to expect no launch-day stock, while CNBC said Apple would not confirm. Stores AppleInsider sampled in the US, Europe, and China were opening early, and early opening can just as well be for pre-order pickups. Shanghai stores losing 23 October pickup about twelve minutes in is Huxiu’s note, not a national inventory release.
The carrier row keeps only Macworld’s 8:50 a.m. Eastern snapshot: T-Mobile still showed late October, AT&T and Verizon showed November, and you had to be a customer. By 19 October, Apple’s own site was on late January. This piece did not recheck each carrier page after that. The resale price is one written sale: 1TB list $2,599, eBay at $3,777.77. The 2TB list price is $3,199. The premium landed before reviews and before deliveries. If the ramp moves in November and December, that gap comes down.
| Storage | Mainland China | United States |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | ¥15,999 | $1,999 |
| 512GB | ¥17,999 (buy page, 12 October) | $2,199 |
| 1TB | ¥21,499 (buy page, 12 October) | $2,599 |
| 2TB | ¥26,499 | $3,199 |
The four US prices are from Macworld’s 16 October list. Cailian Press wrote the China floor of ¥15,999 and the 2TB price of ¥26,499 on 16 October. The 512GB and 1TB China prices, ¥17,999 and ¥21,499, are the buy page as of 12 October. Cailian Press did not rewrite those two tiers. The colors are Night Sky and Star White. Trade-in and education pricing stay off the table. If the buy page has moved, the page wins. The slab phone that is not waiting on this ramp is a different line: Cailian Press said Apple’s store promotion from 20 October takes ¥300 off the iPhone 18 Pro, which went on sale 18 September. Whether to buy that one is in the iPhone 18 Pro launch piece.
When it may ease
Liz Lee’s read: 23 October is only the start of commercial shipments, and output should keep rising in November and December. Apple will feed the United States and China first. Other regions stay tighter. How many units ship this year depends on the fourth-quarter ramp, not on the reservation count at JD.com. Six million is a ceiling estimate, not a monthly quota.
So “orders slip into 2027” describes the ship estimate on orders placed after 16 October. It does not mean the product launches next year, and it does not mean the first units exist only after 25 January. People who caught a 23 October slot are still on that date. Everyone else is queued around January. Whether a given order moves forward is a question for the buy page each week, not for a resale sticker.
FAQ
Did Apple delay the iPhone Duo launch to 2027?
No. It was announced on 9 September, pre-orders opened on 16 October, and 23 October is still launch day. What moved into 2027 is the ship estimate on orders placed after pre-orders opened. Public US notes cluster on 25 January.
Why is launch day still 23 October if you cannot buy one?
Launch day is the arrival window Apple announced. The first batch was taken by the earliest orders within minutes to half an hour. Later orders can still be placed. Their ship estimate is a later date. Apple has not confirmed spare stock in stores on day one.
Is this demand, or a factory that cannot build the phone?
Both. Apple called demand extraordinary. Counterpoint says the binding constraint is supply and the ramp: the foldable display, the hinge, and assembly have to stabilize together. Six million is August’s full-year ceiling, not that day’s inventory.
Is it worth paying more than $1,000 over list on the resale market?
Macworld logged a 1TB sale at $3,777.77 against a $2,599 list price. That was a price for a place in line, before reviews and before deliveries. If November and December ramp cleanly, the gap should shrink. It is not evidence about how the foldable feels in the hand.
If you cannot wait, is there a foldable already in stock?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is already on sale, and the shape is close: a short, wide body and a 7.6-inch inner display. Price and thickness are not repeated here. The slab iPhone 18 Pro has been on sale since 18 September. The store promotion is a different product line.
What to watch next
On 23 October, watch two things: in stores that open early, whether anything is left for people without a pickup appointment, and whether the January date on the website moves forward. 24 October is the day Apple itself named for checking availability again. Those two pages are closer to your order than any full-year shipment forecast.
Keep the year-long figures labeled as analysts. Counterpoint’s 6 million ceiling and TrendForce’s roughly 5 million differ by definition, not by a contest over who is more precise. Apple has not published a pre-order count or a first-batch build number. Until those two figures exist, the shortage is demand and the ramp together, not one sentence or the other.
The phone may wait until January. The iOS build does not have to
During the weeks a foldable sits in shipping, signing, the simulator, and continuous integration can already run on a cloud Mac mini. Xcode stays on a native macOS environment, so the compile queue does not have to stop while you wait for a Duo. On-device checks can wait until the phone arrives. Apple silicon’s unified memory lets a build machine stay up, and idle power stays low enough for an unattended queue. Stability and “the person is waiting on a phone, the repo is not” are the same problem.
